Recently I’ve finished reading Michael McDowell’s 1980 novel Gilded Needles, and wanted to take a moment to make a recommendation to anyone looking for a new read.
McDowell does a fantastic job of setting scenes and writing characters in Gilded Needles. A grimey crime riddled 1800’s New York is the playground he uses to write a spiteful revenge story from a criminal lower class family against a political upper class family
The book is a huge build up and the payoff does not disappoint in the slightest. He describes some brutal scenes that will paint a vivid and memorable image in your head that lingers with you like good books should.
